The Secret Story

“The secret story is the one we’ll never know, although we’re living it from day to day, thinking we’re alive, thinking we’ve got it all under control and the stuff we overlook doesn’t matter. But every single damn thing matters! Only we don’t realize. We just tell ourselves that art runs on one track and life, our lives, on another, and we don’t realize that’s a lie.”

  1. Did you like this book?

PS – thanks for the blog.

  2. I haven’t read The Savage Detectives yet, but this sounded familiar; I checked back and, sure enough, I’d quoted this very same bit (with the same blog heading) as coming from the story “Dentist” in Last Evenings on Earth.

  3. I need to read this book. That quotation reminds me of this Mark Strand poem I have taped up in my bathroom underneath the mirror:

    The Night, The Porch

To stare at nothing is to learn by heart
What all of us will be swept into, and baring oneself
To the wind is feeling the ungraspable somewhere close by.
Trees can sway or be still. Day or night can be what they wish.
What we desire, more than a season or weather, is the comfort
Of being strangers, at least to ourselves. This is the crux
Of the matter. Even now we seem to be waiting for something
Whose appearance would be its vanishing–the sound, say,
Of a few leaves falling, or just one leaf, or less.
There is no end to what we can learn. The book out there
Tells as much, and was never written with us in mind.
